Liftingstane Cottage

Liftingstane Cottage is a superbly comfortable, dog-friendly, semi detached 2 Bedroom holiday cottage. It has been converted from the Farm’s old building and will comfortably sleep upto five adults. Set in a rural location in the mid-section of the beautiful Nith Valley in Dumfriesshire, near to the small village of Closeburn and 3 miles from Thornhill. There is a choice of activities locally to suit all ages including walking, cycling, golfing, fishing and birdwatching. Enjoy a round of golf at the local 18-hole course in Thornhill, or if fishing is your thing, the River Nith provides numerous areas to fish for salmon and trout (licence required). Drumlanrig Castle and Gardens, Ellisland (once home to Robert Burns), Charles Jenck’s Garden of Cosmic Speculation and world class mountain biking routes, the 7 Stanes, are all on your doorstep. 20 minutes south is the town of Dumfries with lots to keep the whole family entertained with farm parks, swimming, ice-skating, art centres and shopping.

According to local historical records Liftingstane Farm had a ’lifting stane’ (lifting stone) on the property up until about 200 years ago, hence how the farm got its name. Unfortunately, no one knows what happened to it. The challenge of the Lifting Stane is to lift it, proving an individual’s strength. Lifting Stanes are common throughout Scotland, Wales and Cumbria, and recently stones have been incorporated into the World’s Strongest Man competitions.

Further afield, take a trip to the Galloway Forest Park, one of the darkest places in the UK, in fact the UK’s first Dark Sky Park. A visit to this area of south west Scotland would not be complete without a day trip to the rugged coastline and seaside, with visits to the quaint villages and towns such as Kippford, Sandyhills, Southerness and Kirkcudbright.

This is a central base for day trips to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stranraer or Carlisle which are all within a 1½ hour drive. If you fancy a stress-free day, why not just relax in the peace and quiet at the farmhouse. Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant 3 miles.

Liftingstane cottage is well-equipped for families with a travel cot, highchair and baby bath available. There is under-floor heating throughout the cottage and a wood burning stove in the living room which completes the cottage feel. We are dog friendly all we ask is that you keep them out of the bedrooms, don't leave them unattended and clean up after them. A small surcharge will only apply for more than 2 dogs.

For your stay, you will be provided with a fully equipped Kitchen, Towels, Hand-wash, Shampoo, Conditioner, Body-wash, Hand & Body Lotion, Hair-dryer, Travel Cot (bring your own cot bedding), High chair, Baby Bath, Patio furniture, Barbecue and Logs for the Wood Burning Stove at no extra cost to make for a very comfortable stay

Sleeping arrangements

The two bedroom accommodation has a Master bedroom with wet room ensuite and Hypnos Kingsized bed. Twin Bedroom has two single beds with extra single guest bed if required. Both bedrooms enjoy country views. Each bedroom also has a wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside tables with lamps and all bedding provided.

Interior layout

The fully fitted open-plan kitchen, dining & living areas open out onto a private seating and raised grassed area through French doors. The main entrance is to the side of the property. The key is contained within a keysafe with the code being provided with your booking confirmation.

There is plenty of off road parking and a secure locked storage room for Bikes, Golf Clubs etc
Relax in the peace and quiet at the cottage, on the garden patio whilst tucking into a delicious barbecue and a glass of wine, and on a clear night, simply gaze at the stars.
